While qualitative research has played an important role within the body of scholarship on teaching and learning in physical education, there are many new, emerging, and innovative research forms that are emerging in the field. Moving beyond the “paradigm wars” of the 1980s and the “quantitative vs qualitative” debates of the 1990s came a new movement within the research community that adopted non-traditional qualitative means of data collection and analysis. These methodologies and methods can allow us to think differently with and through data, involve participants differently, and hence affect the outcomes and impact of scholarly work in physical education.
The Journal of Teaching in Physical Education is pleased to announce a call for manuscripts for a special issue entitled “Emergent, Novel, and Non-Traditional Qualitative Research Methods: Beyond the Interview.” This special issue will highlight new and exciting forms of qualitative research that aim to answer important questions for the field of physical education while reconceptualizing qualitative data collection and analysis.
Aim
The aim of the special issue is to present a collective “re-imagining” of qualitative research using uncommon research paradigms, rigorous approaches to data collection, and forms of data analysis that still construct important and useful information pertaining to teaching and learning in physical education and are informed by scholarship of qualitative methods.
Scope
The scope of the special issue is wide-ranging, including (but not limited to) data collection methods such as visual research (e.g., participant-generated images or photo elicitation), arts-based research, autoethnography, fictional narrative or biographical production, critical incident analysis, and participatory action research. Research that expands upon existing or established means of traditional qualitative methodologies and methods but does so from a post-modern, post-experimental, or socially-just perspective, or discusses the academic and practice landscapes in which scholars seek an audience and impact for their work, will also be considered. Unique forms of data analysis, such as poetic analysis or kinesthetic analysis, among others, are welcomed.
Suggested Topics
Submissions are encouraged from a variety of countries, contexts, settings, and populations, provided that the means of data collection and data analyses methods align with the criteria outlined above. However, papers do not need to based on empirical studies but can also be theoretical, discussion-based, or a review.
Submission and Publication Timeline
The target publication date is October 2024. Therefore, the following timelines are outlined below
- March 15 to June 15, 2023: rolling submission of abstracts
- March 2023 to October 2023: rolling submission of full manuscript based on invitation from abstract
- December 1, 2023: deadline for final revised manuscripts
- 1st quarter 2024: finalize manuscripts for publication
Interested parties should contact the guest editors with any questions leading up to abstract submission. If you would like to contribute, please email an abstract (500 word limit) to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education guest editors for the edition, Mara Simon (msimon3@springfieldcollege.edu) or Joanne Hill (Joanne.Hill@beds.ac.uk). The abstract should include: - Author(s) name, title(s), and affiliation(s)
- Type of scholarly work (e.g., primary research article, theoretical piece, meta analysis, case study, review article, etc.). Please note: commentaries and discussion-based papers addressing novel qualitative methods are welcome. The submission does not need to be solely data-based.
- A description of the proposed paper (i.e., rationale, description of methods and outcomes, data sources, if applicable)
The Guest Editors will review the abstract, provide feedback, and, if deemed a fit for the special issue, invite authors to submit a full manuscript.
