AIESEP Connect: Empowering Research in Physical Education and Sport through Technology

In this AIESEPConnect, Dr Kieran Collins will explore the new gimmicks, gadgets and AI tools which can be ethically employed to turn data into gold in physical education and sport research contexts.

Professional Information

Kieran is the co-founder and programme lead of the new Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Analytics, Technology and Innovation. The programme is the result of a strategic collaboration between Technology Ireland Digital Skillnet, SportsTech Ireland, and Technological University Dublin’s Enterprise Academy. A rapidly growing sportstech industry in Ireland is driven by advances including AI, machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), and biometrics, with the drive to extract business value and performance from sports data at its core.

Dr Collins has been an applied practitioner and researcher for the last 20 years. He has worked across a range of team sports. Recently he has worked with Microsoft on a GPS and AI project and with Google on a digital transformation project. Over the last 7 years he has successfully led two research centres: the Gaelic Sports Research Centre and more recently the Future Skills Research Centre. There are currently eleven MSc/ PhD students registered within these two centres, all undertaking work in elite team sports. The work has generated 116 publications, 80 conference abstracts, collaborations with nine international universities and partnerships across all levels of elite team sports.
