The University of Georgia seeks a skillful leader to head its Department of Kinesiology. This position is a 9-month tenured appointment with 2 months of summer support to begin summer 2023.
The Department of Kinesiology has 26 full-time faculty members and offers B.S.Ed., M.S., MSAT and Ph.D. programs in the academic areas of Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education, Sport Management, and Athletic Training. Department faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their accomplishments as teachers, researchers and service award winners. The Department has excellent facilities in the Ramsey Center located on the main campus. The College of Education consists of 9 departments and approximately 230 faculty members. The University of Georgia is a land- and sea-grant research-intensive university composed of 18 schools and colleges with enrollment exceeding over 40,000 students. Context: The mission of the Department of Kinesiology is to enhance health and well-being for all people throughout the lifespan through the creation, transmission, and application of knowledge related to physical activity, exercise, and sport. The vision is to be a global leader in creating physical activity knowledge, programs, and services while positively impacting the state of Georgia, the United States, and other nations through the development of scholars and practitioners who study and promote physical activity, exercise, and sport.
The Department has academic programs in four areas: Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education, Sport Management, and Athletic Training. Each of these programs offers major courses of study leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees, except Athletic Training, which is a graduate only program. In addition, the Department offers physical activity courses as general education that meet the University requirement for physical education by all undergraduate students.
Responsibilities
The department head is expected to provide visionary leadership for the general direction of the department in a manner that advances excellence in the teaching, research, and service missions in all areas of the unit. This includes, but is not limited to:
a. Promoting informed, collaborative, and strategic decision-making in the unit.
b. Representing and advocating for the department with the college, university, and external constituents.
c. Overseeing matters of budget, facilities, personnel, and curriculum.
d. Serve as a direct supervisor for staff departmental staff.
e. Service as department head comprises 50% of the workload. The remaining 50% will be allocated among instruction, research, and service based on the strengths of the individual hired and the needs of the unit.
Required Qualifications
A. Possess an earned doctorate in kinesiology, one of its subdisciplines, or a closely related field.
B. An excellent record of teaching, service, and research, including acquiring extramural funding, that would be suitable for appointment at the rank of Professor.
C. Evidence of potential to effectively administer a large, complex academic unit with diverse programs.
D. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
A. One year of successful university leadership experience in a complex academic unit with diverse programs.
B. Experience with external accreditors.
C. A record of successful team-building and effective management skills.
D. A demonstrated ability to develop, refine, and implement a strategic plan.
Appointment will be for the 2023-2024 academic year, beginning 1 August 2023.
