The College of Education at Auburn University invites applications for the position of Professor
and Head of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching. With 32 full-time faculty, the
Department prepares teacher candidates and practicing teachers in discipline-specific pedagogy to make reasoned decisions grounded in professional ethics, collaboration, diversity, intellectual vitality, and reflective thinking. Moreover, faculty envision teachers who possess skills and abilities to incorporate a variety of technologies for managing, evaluating, and improving student learning.
About the Department
The department enrolls nearly 800 bachelor’s level students and 300 masters-through-doctoral
level students in 13 areas of study. All faculty members are engaged with school partners in
collaborative clinically-based teacher education and development. C&T’s strategic priorities
include (1) promoting teachers who are competent, committed, and reflective in order to enhance learning among student populations characterized by diversity of individual learning needs, gender, ethnicity, culture, language, and socioeconomic status, and (2) promoting technology for the purpose of enhancing student learning. The faculty is committed to engaging with the school and community and pursues externally-funded projects to support its mission of research, outreach, and teaching. Twenty graduate distance degree programs contribute to the College of Education’s consistent top-ten national ranking for distance graduate education.

Required Qualifications
Earned doctoral degree in one of the department’s program areas or in a closely related field; a
distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service sufficient to meet tenure eligibility
requirements of Auburn University and hold rank of full professor at the time of appointment;
leadership in U.S. public school preservice and in-service teacher education; administrative,
managerial, and financial knowledge and skills to effectively lead an academic department;
documented success as a collaborative leader, with effective communication and interpersonal
skills; substantive commitment and demonstrated contributions toward diversity, equity, and
inclusion.
Additionally, the candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility
requirements to work in the United States at the time of the appointment and continue working
legally for the proposed term of employment; excellent communication skills required. A
background check is required for employment in this position.
Desired Qualifications
Excellent record of teaching and mentoring; at least three years teaching experience; experience
in developing and maintaining partnerships with schools; history of obtaining and supporting
external funding; experience cultivating departmental research activity; excellence in faculty
development and mentoring; expertise initiating and maintaining accreditation; ability to
effectively lead the department in working with multiple constituencies; ability to promote the
department’s strategic priorities.
Responsibilities
The department head serves as senior faculty member and administrator of the academic
department. At the departmental level, this person is responsible for faculty recruitment and
development; instructional program development and quality enhancement; coordination of
departmental research and service programs; evaluation of personnel; and, through the dean,
representing the department inside and outside of the university. The department head also
maintains relationships with students, other administrators, university councils and committees,
alumni, professional organizations, and various other public and private groups. In conjunction
with the college dean, the department head develops the department’s annual budget request,
administers expenditures of the allocated funds, and manages other resources available to the
department. The head facilitates effective relationships within and across department programs
and, as a member of the college’s Leadership Council, works collaboratively with the dean and
other unit leaders to guide the work of the college.
